New Board Member Orientation Sessions are designed to provide newly appointed board members with information and resources needed to begin effectively serving their schools from their very first board meeting. They also provide an opportunity for participants to meet members of other Central Michigan University (CMU) authorized school boards.
A representative of The Center for Charter Schools' leadership team will lead the dinner discussion of CMU's philosophy in chartering schools and the transformational impact that they can make on the lives of the students and families they serve. The University's role as an authorizer and its expectations of charter public school boards and board members will also be discussed.
Though primarily designed to orient newly appointed board members, more experienced board members are also welcome to attend.

At the close of the 2010-2011 school year, The Center for Charter Schools presented boards with the first part of its new, three-part Performance Suite – the Academic Performance Report. This fall, that publication was followed by the Operational Performance Report.
The February BDS session will be devoted to the introduction and overview of the third and final part of the suite, the Fiscal Performance Report. Just as the first two publications provided insight and context to the myriad data and information in each of their topic areas, the Fiscal Performance Report will put each school’s financial data into context and perspective.
This will be followed by briefing on the impact of legislative changes made to the school code that took affect January 1.

Studies have shown that some teachers, some schools and some curricula and instructional methods generate higher student achievement than others — in some cases, dramatically higher. The Lighthouse Inquiry was one of the first studies to examine school board/superintendent teams in districts where schools generated unusually high achievement and compare them to ones in districts where schools have consistently generated unusually low levels of achievement. Its goal was to produce results that would serve as a "lighthouse" to guide other school boards in their efforts to improve student achievement.
Join Margaret “Meg” Hackett of the Thrun Law Firm and the passionate professionals from The Center for Charter Schools for a presentation and discussion of the findings of The Lighthouse Inquiry.
