Boards

The charter public school board's responsibility and main charge is organizational governance, meaning the board holds the ultimate power within the organization. This direction to the charter public school is carried out only at board meetings and when an official vote is cast and recorded in the minutes. Additionally, with this power comes a responsibility to ensure accountability to the public and the CMU Board of Trustees. The charter public school board also has a moral responsibility for safeguarding the organization's mission and resources in such a way as to maintain the public trust.

For any board to operate effectively, it must be clear about its own responsibilities and responsibilities that have been delegated to the staff. Board members must always be aware that the ultimate responsibility for the organizational effectiveness rests with the board. One way to distinguish the difference between roles and responsibilities of the board and the operational leader is to say that the board's focus should be on measuring operational outcomes and the operational leader is responsible for the means by which the outcomes are achieved.
