Building Capacity in Your Team One by One
How would you describe the students in a teacher’s classroom? Do they all excel at the same things? Do they all learn in the same way? Are all kids the same? Of course not! Educators place great value on the uniqueness of each student and teachers focus on how to best meet the needs of that individual student. In this session, attendees explored the value to applying this concept to the development of our team including identifying and nurturing unrecognized strengths, leveraging mentoring practices to build capacity with limited resources and creating a strong team as a whole by focusing on the individual. This session was presented by Laura Stabler, the Center’s director of academic performance and accountability.

Active learning versus compliant behaviors; can you tell the difference? The students look like they are paying attention to the teacher since they are quiet and facing forward. But, are they really engaged in the learning? This session explored the meaning of engagement as it relates to instructional design and delivery to improve student achievement. Engagement strategies were demonstrated and participants left with ideas to enhance active learning in the classroom. This session was presented by Valerie Bailey, a staff member in the Center’s Office of Academic Performance and Accountability.
